Scratch scratch scratch.

Severus looked up at the classroom filled with miscreants trying to find the culprit. No one’s quill was moving but he knew there had been someone writing when they were supposed to be sitting silently, reading the assigned material for their OWLS. There was no reason for writing, the reading did not require note taking.

He went back to grading the papers when he heard it again, scratch, scratch, scratch.

He looked up and saw motion at a SLYTHERIN table. He knew the trouble maker instantly. It wasn’t only that her book was propped up on the table blocking her face but the fact that he could not see her red hair over the top of the book.

He rose quietly and made his way around the tables. No one moved but he knew they were watching as he approached the desk.

She was bent over a well used piece of paper scribbling and erasing lines, not with a quill and magic, but with a MUGGLE pencil. She was drawing, or trying to draw, the small sculpture before her on the desk.

“MISS ADDISON.”

“Shit.”

“Put that away and stay after class, you will have detention. One point will be taken from Slytherin for your indiscretion.”

Her fingers gripped tighter on the pencil and she didn’t look up at him.  He awaited the explosion, but none was forthcoming. With her formidable temper, he was rather intrigued that she had not been sorted into Gryffindor, but she sat in his House colors, a Muggle born in a pit of mostly purebloods, and gave not of what others thought of her.

The release bell sounded and the other students fled. She sat starring at him, those dark blue eyes as unreadable as the book seemed to be to her.

“Was there a reason you chose to draw and not read?”

“I have read this book four times front to back. I am bored of it. And I wanted to finish my drawing.”

“It was a horrible drawing.”

“Says you, the teacher that doesn’t have a hobby, except for terrorizing Gryffindors.”

Severus felt a quirk at his lip – the damnable girl.

“You will be cleaning cauldrons with those terrorized Gryffindors tomorrow night.”

She picked up her items and strode to the desk, placing the figure she had been trying to draw in front of him. It was a model of a Thestral.

“What is this?”

“For inspiring me.”
This is my entry in the FanArtdA Quickfire Challenge #2: Create a piece of Fan Art or Fan Fiction from a book, tv, movie, cartoon, comic, game, etc, that has most inspired you as a person, and artist or a writer.

I have always been a FanArt fanatic - since I was old enough to read Walter Farley's The Black Stallion. When I was in 5th grade I wrote my first FanFiction (not knowing then that I was). It was about my great racing mare Blackstar who was going to challenge the Black Stallion. I still have 4 "books" of that series that I wrote and the first "book" was actually published in and I won the Young Kansas Writer's contest.

Fan Art to me is the expression of your love for someone's work and they joy that you feel is so overwhelming you must create their world in your own way, not to be them or to take away from them but to SHOW them that you admire their works.

I think all fan artists have the same feeling, they just want to be a part of something GREAT!

I lost that for a long time. I was with someone who hated my art and hated my spirit and he broke it, shattered it and I had to start all over again. I found the Harry Potter Series and JKR inspired me to write again and then to do works of her great beasts. What better than a THESTRAL! Truly - for a horse lover and a lover of Fantasy - it is perfect. And Snape - well I know the dark places he resides in his heart. I have been there and come back. I can relate to his pain and his disappointments and ambitions. And while there are many that may not like the character, I find him intriguing and interesting.

I hope that til they day I die I keep doing FanArt and I hope that the authors and others someday truly see Fan Art for what it is - the joy of being intrigued and interested in their world and wanting to touch just a piece of greatness.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Thestral is not finished - it is a work in progress for *ShinigamiSquirrel - I have about 10 more layers of black and hair and "accessories" to add to him.
